Prior to WRI Indonesia, Soni worked on the Geographic Information System for Agriculture, Forestry, and Land Use focus areas. As a student at the Department of Forestry Engineering, Bandung Institute of Technology, he focused more on utilizing remote sensing technology to look at the influence of climate on forestry plant phenology.

At WRI, Soni initially became a data quality control and data analysis intern to assist the Tree Adoption program in Riau. Then, he continued to become a consultant with the position of Forest Research Intern. He worked on participatory mapping to encourage community groups to gain legal access to forest management through social forestry.

Currently, he is a Forest and Land Use Information Management and Research Officer who assists WRI Indonesia West Sumatra Regional team and community groups in land and forest governance and building knowledge information systems.

In his spare time, Soni often spends time playing music, reading, and traveling.
